How to Choose the Best Bed for Your Dog

The Louva dog bed

Here are 5 points to take into account when considering purchasing a new bed for your dog.

1. Your dog's weight

The heavier (and bigger) your dog is, the more support he needs for his joints. Knowing your dog's weight will also help you determine the bed dimensions required.

2. His way of sleeping

Does he sleep in a little ball or stretch out? Once again, this will help you determine the dimensions the bed should have.

3. Destructive temperament

Does he tend to destroy his cushion or clothes around the house? If so, consider the quality, fabric type, and durability of the cushion. Obviously, you want to prevent him from ripping it for his safety, but for your pockets as well.

4. If your dog often feels hot

If your dog often sleeps on ceramic tiles or in cooler corners in the summer, it's probably because he's hot. Avoid too thick fabrics that look "cozy & comfy" (for example, those designed in "kitty"). Also avoid that it is made of polyester fiber. It keeps the heat a lot in summer.

5. If he often gets dirty outside

If your dog likes to play outside a lot and bring dirt into the house (especially in spring and fall), opt for a dog bed with an easily washable cover and fabrics that are difficult to stain.

What are the most important elements of a dog bed?

Comfort & support

The vast majority of cushions found in stores are stuffed with polyester fibers, otherwise called filling, used a lot in the stuffing of children's toys for example.

I have nothing against polyester fiber, but it tends to sag, create clumps over time and build up heat.

This can be okay for small dogs who are always cold, but it becomes more problematic for medium/large dogs who need support for their joints and are always hot.

Sustainability

Expect your dog's bed to really wear out over time.

The dog may try to bite it, scratch it, try to dig into it, or even try to scratch it (which happens a lot with unsterilized baby dogs).

You must therefore ensure that the material the dog bed is made of is durable and resistant.

Washability

No matter what you do, your dog's bed is going to get dirty. You may be able to wipe off some dirty paw prints with a cloth, but make sure it is machine washable.

Your washer will remove all the dirt and even traces of urine that could encourage your dog to do his business in the same place continually.

Style

Your dog will sleep most of the time in the same room where you spend the majority of your time, the living room and the bedroom.

And if you have a beautiful dog bed that fits the vibe of your home, you'll be proud to display it in the living room so your dog can be close to you.

And anyway, when you put effort into your home decor, it's a bit boring to ruin it all with an old, ugly and dirty dog bed.

The solution

When my girlfriend and I brought Winston to his new home for the first time, we quickly realized that beautiful washable, durable and comfortable dog beds didn't exist.

Either you buy a cushion filled with polyester at Costco (we didn't think they were very pretty either).

Or you find a nice dog bed in a store, but it is not durable, not often washable, and is made with cheap padding.

So that’s why we developed our own dog beds.

Our dog beds are washable, durable & comfortable, in addition to complementing your decor.

And they were created by a Quebec artist! :)

We often joke that this will be your last dog bed for life.

Your best friend deserves better than a cheap old bed.

An uncomfortable dog bed that becomes dirty and ugly after a few months is disappointing. You and your dog deserve better.
